A bone fracture or simply a fracture means a break. A fracture may occur due to some accident, fall, or injury while playing or pursuing sports activities. There may be other reasons too that may lead to a bone fracture like low bone density, osteoporosis, these lead to weak bones thus prone to fractures. Osteoporosis causes the weakening of bones especially in older people so it is very important for the elderly to be careful. A bone can have a fracture partially or completely.
Types of fractures: Bone fractures are classified as under.
Closed fracture or Open fracture
If the skin remains intact and does not break open, it would be called a closed fracture. But if the skin opens, it would be an open fracture. An open fracture is more complex and is also called a compound fracture.
Complete fracture
If the bone breaks completely. This fracture will break the bone into two.
Displaced fracture:
In such fractures, a gap forms at the place of fracture. Orthopedician often recommends surgery for such cases.
Partial fracture:
In such cases, the break does not go all the way through the bone.
Stress fracture: In such cases, the bone gets a crack, and it is very tough to trace it without imaging.
Stable fracture: In these, the broken ends of the bone line up and are barely out of place.
Transverse fracture: In such fracture cases, the fracture line is horizontal. Similarly, in an Oblique fracture, the break line goes diagonally across the bone. And in Spiral fracture, it spirals around the bone.
Though the bones are a strong and rigid structure in the body, still they can bend or break due to some outside force. The severity of a fracture depends upon the outside force strength. They may develop a crack that can bend or simply break in two or multiple fragments depending upon the force applied.
Diagnosis and Management:
Healthcare providers use many tools and techniques to find out a fracture. These include X-Ray, Bone Scan, CT Scan, or MRI. Depending upon the findings an orthopaedic surgeon may recommend a treatment plan using splinting, or even surgery.
